Stuff For Nerds!

New Movies for October 16/ by /

16 Oct

Super busy week at the theatres! You’ve got absolutely no excuse now, there’s something for everyone playing at a big screen near you. It’s a little overwhelming, frankly.

CRIMSON PEAK – The master Guillermo Del Toro has produced what is, at the very least, his most beautiful work here. It’s not really a horror film, it’s a “Gothic Romance”, but yeah, there’s ghosts in the mix. Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska… an absolute must-see, and it’ll be even better in IMAX.

STEVE JOBS – Danny Boyle and Aaron Sorkin team up to find what drove the legend by focusing on three huge moments in his professional life. It’s got an exclusive screening at the Varsity this week, then it’ll open wide next week for everyone.

BRIDGE OF SPIES – It takes the other two to push down a Steven Spielberg film to third on the list, but it’s still a winner. Tom Hanks is a government pencil-pusher tasked with setting up a spy swap with Russia, and if it fails it could lead to dubya dubya three.

FREEHELD – Ellen Page and Julianne Moore tell the true story of a couple trying to get basic human rights. Moore is a dying cop who wants to leave death benefits to her life partner but the man won’t have it. Great performances all around, including Michael Shannon and Steve Carell, though it seems reviews have been mixed.

SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE – Great comic talent in this rom-com, with Jason Sudekis, Alison Brie, and Adam Scott. Two sex-addicts who popped each other’s cherries reunite and decide to try dating without sex. Okay, that’s not much of a sales pitch, but there’s a lot of funny people here. Good date night comedy.

GOOSEBUMPS – It’s basically a remake of JUMANJI but with monsters instead of animals. Reviews have been surprisingly positive, but it just looks lame to me, more CGI mayhem and noise, noise, noise. Still a better choice than PAN though.
