Movies for October 9/ by /

9 Oct

MAN there are a lot of films to catch up on right now. New this week:

HYENA ROAD – Paul Gross stars and directs this Canadian look at the clusterfuck that is Afghanistan. Very authentic, but still more interested in looking inward than thrilling audiences.

99 HOMES – Andrew Garfield goes from having his house foreclosed to being the forecloser in this tale of the housing crisis and those who got rich on it. Great performances, but not really big screen entertainment.

PAN – Pretty much everyone thought this looked like a bad idea from the get-go, and the reviews have decided those thoughts were justified. A complete mess on every level. And did we really need an origin story for Peter Pan? Really?

BONUS MOVIES FOR TORONTO (at the TIFF Lightbox): THE FORBIDDEN ROOM – Guy Maddin’s latest is, as always, totally insane, just as we like it. It’s a hallucinogenic dream badly recollecting lost genre films of the past.  Completely original and visually stunning, but lord it ain’t for everyone. But hey, it’s got Udo Kier, Charlotte Rampling, Mathieu Almaric…

GOODNIGHT MOMMY – Do you like creepy films? Like, skin-crawling good creepy? This Austrian thriller will freak your shit right out. Two nine-year-old twin boys think that the woman who’s returned from surgery may not be their mother. Madness like only Europe can deliver.
